A is for ‘acer’ which is Latin for maple.
d is for ‘dissectum’, the lace leaf or cut leaf form.
p is for ‘palmatum’, one of the several species of Japanese Maple. It has the greatest number of cultivars.
j is for japonicum, another species of Japanese Maple.

Red turns bronze-green by late summer, then scarlet for fall. At maturity the ends of the branches tend to cascade.
