A is for ‘acer’ which is Latin for maple.
d is for ‘dissectum’, the lace leaf or cut leaf form.
p is for ‘palmatum’, one of the several species of Japanese Maple. It has the greatest number of cultivars.
j is for japonicum, another species of Japanese Maple.

A. p. 'Murasaki kiyohime' BROAD DWARF  •  2-3'  •  5-8  •  SUN TO PART SHADE Do not be fooled by the height. This is not a trough or a rock garden plant; it may get only 3' tall but it will eventually grow 12 to 18' wide and there goes the entire rock garden. This is a fantastic maple; think of it as a great green pillow for a woodland giant. The small star shaped leaves have a purple rim on them in the spring. #1 @ $35.00

A. p. 'Nicholsonii' UPRIGHT  •  9-12'  •  ZONE 5-8  •  SUN TO PART SHADE Large, deeply divided, long lobed leaves start out yellow-green, rimmed in soft red, then pure green for summer. Fall color is the very brightest imaginable red. Branches are open and spreding so it will grow wider than tall. #1 @ 35.00, #2 @ 50.00

A. p. 'Nishiki momiji' UPRIGHT  •  10' - 12'  •  5-8  •  SUN TO PT. SHADE Spring brings leaves with pink and orange tones, colors that recede slowly to the margins then disappear as bright yellow-greens take over. The leaves have long, finely toothed lobes and turn an outrageous red in the fall. This cultivar is in a standout-specimen category with its colors, textures and its oval, upright form! #2 @ $50.00

A. p. 'Novum' UPRIGHT  •  15-20'  •  ZONE 5-8  •  SUN TO PT. SHADE The palmate leaves are similar to 'Bloodgood' but are distinct in their lighter and brighter red. Green infuses the red in summer and gives over to scarlet in fall. "Novum' is beautiful, hardy and vigorous; it has strong branches and good structure. #2 @ 50.00

A. p. 'Nuresagi' UPRIGHT  •  12'-15'  •  5-8  •  SUN TO PT. SHADE Translate 'Nuresagi' and you get 'Wet Heron', though definitely better than 'Wet Dog', not what I personally associate with something as beautiful as this tree. The large leaves of dark purple are deeply divided and the lobes spread out. The young branches also have some purple color. A. p. 'Ojishi' UPRIGHT  •  3-5'  •  5-8  •  SUN-PT SHADE This is a small version/form of the better known 'Shishigashira' or Lion Head Maple. Leaves are green and crinkled, with the edges rolling inward. Fall color is red with orange highlights. #1 @ 38.50

A. p. 'Okukuji nishiki' UPRIGHT  •  5-7'  •  5-8  •  SUN-PT SHADE This plant looks like a baby 'Butterfly', though possible more dramatic. The leaves are similar tones and patterns of variegation. Growth rate is slower and mature size smaller. #1 @ 38.50; #2 @ $52.00

A. p. 'Okushimo' UPRIGHT  •  15'-18'  •  ZONE 5-8  •  SUN TO PT SHADE The foliage of Okushimo is unusual. Each lobe on every leaf rolls in and upward toward the center forming sharply pointed ends that thrust abruptly into space. Equally outstanding is its fall color which reaches a feverish degree of yellow so intense it seems like a fire against a dark evening sky. The branches are angled upright so the tree has an unusually narrow profile making it wonderfully suited for small, difficult to fill spaces. # 2 @ $45.00. A. p. 'Olsen's Frosted Strawberry' upright  •  8-12'  •  5-8  •  PART SUN; PART SHADE NEW AND EXCITING cultivar named for the late Harry Olsen. In bright sun the leaves turn a brilliant, reticulated strawberry red with green and silver accents; in the shade the leaves are silver with green veins and strawberry accents.
